What those kitchens need

A Blue Springs kitchen from 1975 to 1995 usually has oak or laminate cabinets with a soffit above them, a lazy Susan in one corner and not many drawers. The rooms are often a good size. They just weren't planned around today's appliances. Common fixes are pulling down the soffit and running cabinets to the ceiling, trading base cabinets for deep drawers, and building a pantry cabinet where a broom closet was.

01How far is Blue Springs from your route?

Central Blue Springs is about an 18-minute drive from central Independence along I-70, so measuring visits and installs there are routine.

02My Blue Springs kitchen is from the 1980s. Can you keep the layout?

Yes. Keeping the sink, range and refrigerator where they are keeps plumbing and wiring out of the job and usually avoids a permit. New cabinets can still add drawers, a taller upper run and a better corner.

03Can you build a mudroom bench by the garage door?

Yes. That spot between the garage and the kitchen is the most common mudroom we build in houses from this era. Lockers, a bench and closed storage above fit in surprisingly little wall.

04Do Blue Springs houses need lead-safe tear-out?

Some do. Most Blue Springs homes were built after 1978 and fall outside the EPA's RRP rule, but houses from the early 1970s and before are covered when painted cabinets or trim are removed.
